EGYPTS CULTURE ~ Egypt & the people
'Nowhere are there so many marvellous things' as in Egypt, 'nor in the world besides are to be seen so many things of unspeakable greatness'. Herodotus 5th Century BC

Egypt truly is an ancient land and this richness still at its heart. It has been conquered, colonised and reconquered innumerable times and is now an amalgam of these legacies and a colourful mix of traditions, religions, fertile Nile life and desert homelands.

Flowing gown and headdresses of the Bedouin can be seen along side teenagers in Levis and Nike trainers. Whole families living on their boats no bigger than a couple of minis, fishing under the shadow of a millennia style building. Architecture, mosques and antiquities are squeezed between corrugated huts and dilapidated buildings. In Egypt diversity abounds.

Despite the mixture of faiths and beliefs, there is genuine warmth of the people and pride of their country that seems to bond them together. Through the seeming chaos and ‘Inshallah’ (‘as God wills it’) laid back attitude, there is a richness to be appreciated.

Egyptians have an excellent (albeit somewhat banana-skin) sense of humour, and will readily respond to gags and jokes. If nothing else, it simply makes economic sense to behave this way, since prices in town are governed largely by behaviour!

You’ll come across two distinct groups of nationals – the Egyptians and the Bedouins, both very proud of their individual roots. Bedouins do still live traditional lifestyles in the desert in tents and small concrete huts (albeit with the occasional satellite TV system), but many now live in the towns or work for the hotels.

Plenty of Egyptians speak English although not always comprehensively ..but they love to try! Even with the recent upsets in the Middle East, you’ll find them a very friendly nation. Many of the hotel staff have been there longer than we have and there is a certain family atmosphere there. It is a land where tipping is a very acceptable way of getting things done, for that extra special service and just saying 'thanks for doing your job' - so it is highly recommended!
